I think the chapter is probably best discussed in two parts - one to do with the final days of the journey. And better so than to perish nonetheless – as we surely shall, if we sit here – and know as we die that no new age shall be.Welcome to our Chapter of the Week, Mount Doom. For, my lords, it may well prove that we ourselves shall perish utterly in a black battle far from the living lands so that even if Barad-dûr be thrown down, we shall not live to see a new age. ‘We must walk open-eyed into that trap, with courage, but small hope for ourselves. Here is what Gandalf proposed at the last debate: But they certainly faced the danger of arriving too soon - before the ring could be destroyed. They set off fast after the siege was broken so as not to arrive too late. They knew that drawing Sauron's armies out of Mordor would give Frodo and Sam more chance of reaching Mount Doom. Gandalf was desperate for exact timings and distances when he heard Faramir had met the hobbits. They knew that Frodo and Sam might have reached Cirith Ungol just before the siege of Gondor, from Faramir's report. So did Aragorn and the others even know that the timing of their battle to get Sauron's attention would work out? Or was it just a gamble that ended up paying off? Or is there an obvious detail I'm just forgetting? I'm not exactly sure on how much time passes from when the hobbits are separated from the rest - I'm sure this is further obfuscated by the nature of cinema as opposed to books - but I'm under the impression it was at least several weeks of travel, if not months He knew Sauron would figure the only reason someone would be crazy enough to directly attack Mordor is if they were in possession of the ring, and the ruse workedīut the only reason the ruse did work is because Frodo just happened to have made enough progress towards Mt. And even then, this might have been addressed in the film and I've just forgottenīut I was just thinking, Aragorn's whole gambit using the palantir to fool Sauron was to distract him and move his forces away from Sam and Frodo's path. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there! Say hello to our friends in the following places:įirst of all, please forgive me - I've only seen the movies, not read the books.
